wood furniture made by hand in Los Angeles
Inspired by the simple forms of JB Blunk and similar bohemian carpenter-designers, the Misterioso Table is a study in the rhythm of form as dictated by the natural material and the tools used. Those being mostly plane and spokeshave. The piece was designed while listening to Thelonious Monk's seminal album 'Misterioso.'
Everyone knows the love seat is nothing more than a glorified bench, or a miniature couch. But the fact is it's often a necessary item for city dwellers who lack the room for a sectional. Our design marries the charm and warmth of a Shaker influenced bench, with the comfort of a modern couch. Hand shaved spindles provided back support, and its solid wood construction ensures that the piece will be an heirloom.
Available in white oak or walnut, contact for upholstery options.
On the island of Maui there is a stretch of coast that is as isolated and remote as it is surpassingly beautiful. This area, on the island’s east side, is home to a small community of hearty, back to the land types, many of whom grow their own food and built their own homes. As a result, there is a certain organic aesthetic to the architecture that we find very charming. The Hana dining chair, with its hand shaped spindles and seat, is a nod to this rugged ethos; hand made as a way of life.
available in walnut (shown), white oak, and cherry | finished with shop made oil and wax blend
In the 18th century a profound design movement took place in Wales; it was led by peasant carpenters who-simply in an effort to create a practical seating option-produced one of the most elegant, modern chairs of that time. It is known as the 'Welsh Stick Chair' and it's makers are thought to be the forefathers of the Shakers.
Light and strong, the Beachcomber Stool evokes the sight of an old wooden monohull; it's lean, sturdy mast together with the rigging worthy of the high seas.
Inspired by the casual elegance of Scandinavian cafes, with their clean, minimal aesthetic and just enough whimsy to keep things loose, the Sommar High Back was designed to fill a variety of roles. It has the right amount of rustic charm to be at home in a pub, but refined enough to be seated at the dining table. Hand shaved spindles and wedged through-tenons provide rich details and solid form.
Available in white oak or walnut, finished with Danish oil.
A simple, meditative form for clean living and clear thinking. The Tea Bench is humble, yet sophisticated with wedged through tenons, a hand shaved stretcher joining the legs, and a subtle under bevel on the seat.
Shown in white oak, available in custom sizes.
The namesake of this piece is an alley one block from our studio, known for its bazaar-like display of stalls hawking clothes and textiles at wholesale prices. The scene is very reminiscent of markets in Central America and, walking through it during breaks from the shop, one feels instantly transported out of the US.
It's a hectic environment, however, and the Santee Sideboard is a meditation on minimalism in answer to the raucous consumerism taking place below.
Shown in walnut.
A very blonde, very casual version of the Sommar High Back.
This piece was designed for those spaces where an elevated level of informality is desired; the cafe that's impossibly chic yet not trying too hard. We worked hard to produce this chair, but it's easy on the eyes.
Shown in maple.
Initially designed for a client with a Summer home out east, the East End Trestle is made with large dinner parties in mind. It is sturdy yet light, and the base can be broken down should you decide to set it out on the porch for a night or a season. Shown in whitewashed white oak in a nod to the silver toned deck boards lining the many docks of the Suffolk county coast.

Ideal For Kitchen, Cafe, Restaurant, Bar, and Hotel Furnishing.
Light and strong, the Beachcomber bar stool evokes the sight of an old wooden monohull; its lean, sturdy mast together with the rigging worthy of the high seas. Constructed of hand-shaped legs and stretchers, each piece is carefully fit and pinned with hardwood pegs and wedges to last for generations, much like the sea craft that inspires them.
For every bar stool, we start with scrupulously chosen lumber; each board must consist of straight grain and have absolutely no defects. This is not just for aesthetics, the clear grain gives the stool its strength. The boards are then milled to dimension and shaped by hand using a combination of machines and time-honored hand tools. They are then given a polish by taking thin shavings with well-sharpened planes and spokeshaves; rarely is sandpaper used in our shop. Once assembled, the Beachcomber bar stool receives a natural oil and wax finish. Shown in walnut, the piece is also available in white oak.

The Hana Trestle Dining table is our take on the classic trestle form, beloved by both the shakers and their distant woodworking cousins, the Japanese-who have reinterpreted the design in the most beautiful ways.
Each table begins with scrupulously chosen walnut boards; evaluated on their clarity and straightness of grain. The lumber is milled on our well tuned machines, then shaped by hand to form tight fitting joinery for the base. The top is polished with a sharp Stanley no. 4 plane which leaves a shimmering surface unattainable with sandpaper. Finished with a natural oil and wax blend.

It is made from carefully chosen, sustainably sourced wood; each board selected for its clarity and straightness of grain. The select lumber is milled with machines, then the joinery cut by hand. This is a unique piece made from a single slab of California redwood sustainably harvested from a fallen treen in Humboldt county. I personally picked up the plank from a woodworker in Arcata while on a road trip up the coast; it was an off cut from a 20 foot long flitch cut board. At 19.5" wide, it could double as either a large bench or a small coffee table.
The time honored mortise and tenon joinery on the base is hand crafted and each joint secured with a maple pin. It's built to last a lifetime, while simultaneously displaying the delicate beauty of the wood. The piece is finished with an all natural oil and wax blend that enhances the deep garnet tone that is characteristic of the iconic California species.

The St Helena Tray is a piece that will complete your kitchen. Hang it from a pot rack, or simply lean it against the back splash and the warm walnut and hand shaped minimalist form will lend comfort and elegance. When guests arrive, even the most hastily assembled charcuterie and cheese selection will be a show stopper when placed on the broad walnut tray.
Made by hand in our LA studio of FSC certified North American walnut, and finished with pure walnut oil, the St Helena Serving Tray is built to last with a breadboard end-an ancient technique that prevents twisting from exposure to water after washing. We make each piece with great care, selecting only the finest boards and shaping them with well tuned tools by hand in our small, light filled studio.

During a road trip along the coast of the Pacific Northwest, my partner and I stopped by the Salishan Lodge in Gleneden Beach, Oregon to see the inspiring work of Leroy Setziol. His hand carved wall panels and doors, made mostly from local walnut, decorated the rambling common areas of the historic lodge. They were at once rough hewn and finely detailed, echoing the natural features of the Northwest; grand, sweeping forests punctuated by delicate lakes and streams and evergreens.
I returned from the voyage full of inspiration, determined to try my hand at carving my favorite species, black walnut. Armed with a single gouge and a mallet, I went to work and sketched out a poem in the tobacco colored grain. I found the process so enjoyable that I’ve hardly been able to stop myself; no piece of scrap is safe from the sharped edge of my gouge. The beauty of it is just that; these panels are all made from offcuts that would otherwise end up bound for the campfire.
